Our story begins with Gustavo Campos’s first contact with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu while watching UFC VHS tapes at a friend’s house, saw legendary Royce Gracie struggling and was so impressed with the fight that he decided to join a gym at 18 years. Guto was still living with his parents at the time, and since his father disapproved of Jiu-jitsu, it was then that he had to find a part-time job to pay his trainings.
It started at the academy of Carlos Aveline, who was a black belt for Zé Mario Sperry and Walter Matos. Guto adapted very well to the sport and soon went from 3 lessons a week to 2 lessons a day, 7 days a week in his early months.
His intense training and love for the sport soon earned him three consecutive world titles from 2001, 2002 and 2003. As he progressed through the track rating system, in 2004 he was a black belt graduate of Walter Matos.
Since 2002 Guto aimed to open his own gym, as at the time there was no possibility to rent a space.
It was then that his mother ceded his living room and thus the first headquarters of Guetho Jiu-jitsu was born, but the space soon became too small and it was necessary to expand rapidly to accommodate the students who were crowding his classes.
